  2. Ch 6 Rome Test • Answer each of the following in complete sentences. Some questions will require more explanation than others. Make sure that you answer the question COMPLETELY. (7pts each)

Describe what the Gracchi brothers and Julius Caesar had in common. • They were both killed for something they did. • The Gracchi brothers and Julius Caesar both redistributed public land to veteran soldiers. The Senate saw this as a threat to their power. The Senate decide to have them murdered publicly in the Roman Forum

  4. 2. Who was fighting in the Punic Wars? How many Punic Wars were there? Which side was victorious? Who were the leaders and Generals for each side? • Rome and Carthage, 3, Rome, Hannibal and Scipio • Rome was fighting Carthage in the Punic Wars. There were three different series of wars in which the Romans were victorious. Hannibal was the General for Carthage and Scipio was the general for the Romans.

  5. 3. How did Thomas Jefferson Feel about the Roman republic and what actions did he take to prove how he felt? • He Liked it and created his own. • He admired the roman republic and its honesty. He thought that it was the best government created and used it as a model when proposing the creation of the U.S. government

Why did Europeans and other later civilizations want to use the Ancient roman Architectural techniques and building methods? • It lasted long and look pretty • The Europeans used Ancient Roman techniques and methods because of the stability of their buildings. They also thought that the detail was beautiful and inventive.

  7. 5. What types of things are in our society today because of the Ancient Roman cultural influence? Sports stadiums, Nascar, Movies and books, government buildings. The Roman Cultural is seen in our society today through things such Columns on our Government buildings, our interest in Professional Sport and even our movies and literature.

  8. 6. How did the roman Republic create a system of checks and balances and what were the three parts of the Roman Republic • Assembly and tribunes, Senate, Consuls. The checked each other by vetos. • The Republic consisted of three parts the Assembly and tribunes, Senate, and Consuls which each one of them having their own responsibilites. Each part also had the ability to veto the other parts which kept the system honest and fair.

  9. 7. Describe the two social classes in Early Rome. • Particians were Rich and the Plebeians were poor • There were two social classes that controlled society in Early Rome. The patricians were the smaller class but the wealthier that used their influence to control most of everything. The Plebeians were the majority of the society and the poor. They were usually taken advantage of by the Patricians

  10. 8. How many Consuls ruled at one time? How long did they hold office? How many member were there in the Senate and how long did they hold office? What did they do in times of crisis and how long did they serve? • 2 consuls for a year, 300 never stopped, dictator held for 6 months • The Romans elected 2 consuls at the same time that ruled for a year at a time. There were 300 members in the Senate that each held office for life. In times of Crisis the would elect a dictator that had complete control and only ruled for 6 months at a time.

What did Gaius Marius do to the Roman Military and Why did it cause the Generals to become corrupt? • He opened up to all and the Generals fought each other • Gaius removed the restriction on involvement in the military which allowed even non landowners to participate. This cause corruption in the military due to people joining and being loyal to general in order for personal gain and not Imperial gains. This led general to fighting each other in order to gain land to give to their soldiers.

What are the 5 stages of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire and what are some of the characteristics or events that happen in each stage? • Establish Rome (Republic), Expand and Conquer( Punic Wars and Greek Defense) Solidify Empire (Trimvarates) PaxRomana (architectural techniques) Decline ( Bad leaders Inflation etc)

  13. 10 continued • Rome went through 5 stages of development while becoming an Empire. The first stage was establishing Rome through creating a government called the republic. The second stage was Expansion and conquering. This developed through the Punic Wars and the Greek defense. The third Stage was solidifying and empire because Rome had out grown the republic. They used ruling triumvirates until they settled for having on emperor at a time. The Fourth stage was PaxRomana. The period of peace that they experienced after solidifying the empire created many architectural improvements and accomplishments. The Final stage was the Fall of the empire. The Empire fell due to reason such as bad leaders, inflation and corruption within the government.
