Bachelor of Science in Education & Masters Degree in Reading Middle School Math Certified in FL, NC, MD, Washington DC, & VA Administrative Certification in FL Kagan Cooperative Learning International Trainer & Coach MATH SPECIALIST June 2010 – August 2014 (current consultant for Kagan) Taught 19 years (6 years in NY; 6 years FL, 4 years Kagan Trainer full time and 4th year in Arlington, VA) This will be my 20th year in education#i’mgettingold! Miss Heather DeMao 

How Content Is Taught: • Kagan Structures which call on EVERY student, so ALL: • Increase math achievement • Improve self esteem & math confidence • Improve social skills • Foster communication skills ***kaganonline.com/research*** • PowerPoint Presentations • Smartboard Lessons • Work with manipulatives • Supplementary CD’s/Videos • BIG IDEAS Math 6 (textbook home) • Homework is assigned out of textbook (stay home), the workbook (kept in class) and handouts. All handouts will eventually be accessible on CANVAS.

  6. Ultimate Goal:***Please reference syllabus for specific objectives taught. Algebra Readiness: All students can demonstrate their conceptual understanding using pictures, numbers and/or words. They need to be able to: • communicate orally and/or in writing • demonstrate their understanding using models or representations • apply their skills in math solving situations.

  7. Grade Categories • Homework/Classwork 10% Homework effort grade 100% ***late homework is accepted on most all assignments and will be noted in ParentVUE Classwork: independent practice during class (graded on accuracy not effort) IB 15% Quizzes/Tests 75% ***6th grade math teachers plan collaboratively, give common assessments, and have equal grade equivalents. Assignment grades will be posted regularly on SYNERGY along with quiz and test announcements by 10/2/17.

  8. Extra Help Ms. DeMao is available for extra help as needed (Yellow Jackets Period, lunch and afterschool by appt.) ***Students can make an appt. during TA time or during math class. Wednesday: Math extra help with community members starts Wed. 10/4 at 2:30-3:30 pm on a weekly basis. Mon., Tues, & Thurs: All subject HW help, including math, in the library @ 2:30-3:30 pm
