  2. Revolution of 1800 • Jefferson wins by a majority of 73 to 65 electoral votes • Jefferson and Burr are deadlocked • Mission to restore the republican experiment • Peaceful and orderly transfer of power to another party • “We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists”

Louisiana Purchase, 1803 • Napoleon induced the King of Spain to give France the Mississippi region of Louisiana • Jefferson sends James Monroe to Paris to buy as much land from the French as $10 million could get • If it didn’t work, Jefferson would consider allying with the British • Napoleon decides to sell all of Louisiana for $15 million

  4. Louisiana Purchase, 1803 • Jefferson becomes conscience stricken • Believes in strict interpretation of Constitution • Constitution says nothing about purchasing land • Senate approves of the treaty

Lewis and Clark Expedition, 1804-1806 • Jefferson’s agrarian republic is realized! • Jefferson sends his personal secretary, Meriwether Lewis and army officer, William Clark on an adventure • Two and a half year expedition • Yields info on science, maps, and knowledge of the region • Demonstrated viability of passage to the Pacific

  7. Tripoli Naval War, 1801-1805 • Reduced the military to 2500 • The U.S. would set and example by shunning military force and winning friends through “peaceful coercion” • Pirates of the N. African Barbary states were used to being bought off • Pasha of Tripoli became dissatisfied with American payments for “protection”
