  1. So why study the ocean?

  2. FEAR

  3. Marine Science: • Is the study of living organisms and their relationship to the chemical, physical and geological nature of the ocean. • Involves: • Physical science • Life science • Earth and space science

  4. Marine science consists two branches • Oceanography & Marine Biology

  5. Marine Biology • Study of living organisms in the ocean and the environments in which they live • marine biology student • boston marine biologist

  6. Oceanography is the study of the physical properties of the ocean. • Tides, waves, currents, • temperature, salinity, pressure • Ocean floor geology • Water chemistry • NO FEAR WAVES

  7. The four main branches of oceanography: • Biological oceanography (Marine biology) • Chemical oceanography • Geological oceanography • Physical oceanography • Surf Much?

  8. Branches of Oceanography • Biological oceanography (also called marine biology) studies the diversity of life in the ocean and the ocean’s role as their habitat. (food webs, ecology)

  9. Chemical oceanography studies the chemistry of seawater (salinity)

  10. Geological oceanography concerns itself with the geology of the ocean (seafloor)

  11. Physical oceanography is the study of the physics within the marine environment (waves) • Crazy wave

  12. REVIEW: So why study Marine Science • Biodiversity • Natural Resources • Transportation • Climate and Weather • Economy & 70% of our planet is covered by oceans 90% of world’s population lives within 50 miles of the shore Beauty

  14. Parts of EARTH • Hydrosphere: Water • Lithosphere: Land • Atmosphere: Air • Biosphere: Life

  15. 5 Oceans 1 Pacific Ocean (the largest) 2 Atlantic Ocean 3 Indian Ocean 4 Arctic Ocean 5 Southern Ocean Amazing oceans Oceans

  16. Got Ocean? • The average depth of the ocean is 3,800 meters (=12,500 feet) • its deepest depth is 7,000 ft greater than the highest elevation on land (Mt. Everest 29,000 ft; Mariana Trench 36,163 ft) • The average temperature of the ocean is only 39 ̊F

  17. Difference between an OCEAN and a SEA • Seas are smaller than oceans. • Typically, seas are partially enclosed by land

  18. Seas

  19. Pacific Ocean -Named in 1520 by FeridandMegellan • Paci = Peace -Largest -Pacific Ocean is larger than all of the Earth's land area combined -Deepest Ocean: Mariana trench @ 11,022 m or 36,161 ft. -Almost the entire rim of the Pacific basin is ringed with volcanoes and earthquake areas Pacific Northwest Species

  20. Cameron

  21. Atlantic Ocean • ½ the size of Pacific • Not as deep, Puerto Rico Trench is 30,246 ft • Named after Atlas mountains in NW Africa

  22. Indian Ocean • Named for proximity to India

  23. Arctic Ocean • 7% size of Pacific • Only ¼ as deep as other oceans • Has permanent layer of sea ice at surface • Named after the northern constellation Ursa Major (Big Dipper) • ARCTIC

  24. Southern Ocean (Antarctic Ocean) • Named for location in Southern Hemisphere • Located 50 degrees south Latitude and below • Actually part of all oceans in Southern Hemisphere • Wow • Womems ocean racing team

  25. IMPORTANCE OF OUR OCEANS • 7 min 70% air from ocean
