  3. What is Oceanography ? Oceanography, also called marine science or oceanology, is the part of Earth science that studies the ocean. The study of the ocean covers a variety of topics such as marine life, currents, waves, ecosystems, ect.

  4. Physical Oceanography It’s the study of the physical properties of seawater, dynamics, properties of water, and along with the processes that control these properties. This involves a balance of theory, field observation, experiments, and modeling.

  5. Geographical Oceanography Production - evolution of the seafloor, transport, and burial of sedimentary materials – physical and chemical conditions in the water column - are common topics of study.

  6. Chemical Oceanography Is the study of the origin and composition of seawater, relationships between chemical compounds, and how its affected by biological, geological and physical factors.

  7. Biological Oceanography Is the study of the communities of the ocean - how the distribution, abundance and life history of organisms are affected by physical, chemical, and geological processes.

  8. Importance of the Ocean Since the beginning of time, the ocean has served as a source of food – fish and shell-fish. There not only a great source of food but also for fuels, such as petroleum and natural gases. The ocean plays an important role in the water cycle, its current’s influence the climate of many areas.

  9. Fun Fact The ocean contains nearly every element of the periodic table.

  10. The ocean provides 25% of bioproducts and 16% of animal protein consumed by man. Earth is a world whose economy and industrial development are threatened by a depletion of land resources, the ocean and coast is emerging as a new source of energy with its extensive amount of minerals, energy and food resources.

  11. Canada’s Ocean Strategy Canada adopted the Ocean’s Act in 1997. Canada's role: • A willingness and commitment to manage the multiple uses of our oceans • Development of a strong oceans knowledge base • And increased awareness of the importance of sustaining marine ecosystems for present and future generations.

  12. Marine Protected Areas These Marine areas are of high biodiversity or biological productivity: • Basin head • Gilbert bay • Eastport • The gully NS • Musquash Estuary • Bowie seamount • Endeavour Hydrothermal Vents BC
