    2. Nationalism began in the 1800’s when people began to become upset at British colonialism People were treated as second class citizens and Indians could not do traditional jobs such as cloth making because it competed with British facories

    3. Organizations Soon two groups were formed to fight for Indian rights 1885 the Indian national Congress was formed for Hindus \ 1906 the Muslim League was formsed for Muslims These two groups soon organized to call for the independence of India

    4. During WWI Indians supported the British war effort in hopes of gaining their freedom The British did not give India freedom, instead the Rowlatt Act was passed that gave the authority to arrest Indians without trial and prison for up to two years

    5. Amristar In the province of Punjab Indians met to protest against the British in the Spring of 1919. The British opened fire on the protestors and killed over 400 people This caused all of India to unite agaisnt the British

Post War India India was divided into East and West Pakistan for Muslims and the rest of India was left for Hindus Riots broke out among the people Gandhi was killed by a Hindu who thought that favored the Muslims Today India has a parliamentary government, but Pakistan and India remain at odds over religion
