  • How did Hernan Cortes interact with the Aztecs?

Now that you’ve seen two documents about Cortes and the Aztecs, develop three possible explanations for the image below with your partner.

The Conquistadors

  • Hernan Cortes was an early conquistador

    • Landed in Mexico in 1519

    • Headed inland toward Tenochtitlan

      • Helped by Malinche, a young Native American women guide

      • Helped Cortes form alliances against the Aztecs

  • Moctezuma: sent gifts of gold and silver, but urged Cortes not to come to Tenochtitlan

    • Cortes arrived and was dazzled by the grandeur of the city

Fall of Tenochtitlan

  • Moctezuma welcomed Cortes to his capital

    • Soon relations grew strained

    • Aztecs drove Spanish from their city

      • Moctezuma was killed

  • 1521: Cortes returns and captures/destroys Tenochtitlan

  • On the ruins of Tenochtitlan, the Spanish build Mexico City

PQ3

  • Did Cortes’ success inspire other Spanish conquistadors?

Francisco Pizarro and the Inca Empire

What does this image suggest about how Pizarro conquered the Incas?

Pizarro in Peru

  • Francisco Pizarro arrived in Peru in 1532, just after the Incan ruler ATAHUALPA won the thrown after a bloody civil war

  • Helped by Native American allies, Pizarro captured Atahualpa after slaughtering thousands of his followers

  • Pizarro demanded a huge ransom for Atahualpa’s return

    • Incas paid, but Atahualpa was killed
