Abstract The use of IEEE 802.11u provides assistance to dual mode STAs by providing lists of cellular networks in the vicinity of the AP. 3GPP has specified the contents of the Generic Container which IEEE 802.11u makes available to the handsets (non-AP STAs). This contribution suggests adding CDMA and WiMAX radio access technologies (RATs) to the current GSM RAT, which the draft standard currently addresses. With each system (GSM, CDMA, WiMAX) operating independently and with its own base stations, each system therefore requires its own Native Protocol ID and its own content within a generic container. Provision of the GAS Native Protocol IDs now avoids future change in the (draft) standard; each Protocol ID would be used only when the appropriate SDO (Standards Defining Organization) specifies its contents to be placed within a generic container. IEEE 802.11 and Cellular Systems • The focus of TGu is threefold: • Network discovery and selection • Information transfer from external networks using QoS mapping • Mechanism for provision of emergency services • Network discovery and selection is significantly aided by the provision of Cellular Network information for 3GPP systems, using Native GAS to provide the generic container defined by 3GPP. • Two other WAN / cellular systems not yet covered are: 3GPP2 (CDMA2000) WiMAX George Bumiller, Research In Motion

Benefits of Cellular Network Information • Provides to the multimode handset (non-AP STA) cellular network information, for rapid easy transition (network discovery and selection) to cellular. • Increases the usefulness of Wireless LAN systems, through provision of this information. A basic means of furthering the use of IEEE 802.11 systems. • Extends this beyond 3GPP (GSM) systems, to other major cellular & WAN systems, 3GPP2 (CDMA2000) and WiMAX • Easily implemented, with the each SDO defining the contents to be placed within a generic container.
