  1. Aerobic Kneeling Chapter Six

  2. Introductory Comments • Realizing We Must Train for the Marathon of the Christian Life • Endurance is needed to run the race of the Christian life. You don’t need endurance to run one hundred yards. You do, however, need endurance to run 6 miles, 385 yards…That’s why there are no starting blocks in the Christian life…When you’re running a marathon, your focus isn’t on your start—it’s on your finish” • The key to how any of us finishes is how well we’ve trained.

  3. Discuss • How do you stay in shape spiritually? • Is your current spiritually conditioning enough to keep you going in the marathon? • But reject profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise yourself toward godliness. 8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. (1 Timothy 4:7-8) • But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. (Hebrews 5:14)

  4. Prayer Is the Best Aerobic Exercise There Is “A Spiritual self starter is a man who is in good spiritual shape. That means he does two things:” 1) He consistently eats the nutritious diet of Scripture and 2) he consistently spends time in aerobic kneeling. Prayer is the exercise of the man who is a spiritual self-starter…A marathon runner not only trains efficiently but eats correctly. Both enable him to have physical endurance. The same is true of the Christian life.”

  5. Discuss • Prayer gives us the opportunity to walk into the office of the CEO of the universe and talk with him about the things we want, for as long as we want, anytime we want. If that’s that privilege prayer gives us, why don’t we take advantage of it more often? • This chapter suggests that thirty minutes, three times a week is a good goal to shoot for with our prayer life. • What’s keeping you from doing that right now? • What would it take to get those things out of the way? • Why not get them out of the way right now?

  6. Discuss • As You examine your life, are there any things you’ve made more of a priority than your prayer life? Why? • What do you think would happen if thousands of Christian men got their priorities right and started to get serious about prayer? • I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; 1 Timothy 2:8 • Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit. James 5:16-18

  7. Thinking about what we should pray for. • If we’re going to be spiritual leaders for our wives and children…we need to take time to soak ourselves in God’s Word; we need time to chew on what Scripture is saying to us; we need time to come before God and ask Him to give us the wisdom we need to be His men in this world. • 1) What areas of life do you most need God’s wisdom? • 2) If you came up with a list of things you most wanted to talk with God about, what would be on it? • 3) Now take an honest look at the things on your list. How many of them reflect your priorities? How many reflect God’s?

  8. Biblical Prayer Requests • Matthew 6:9-13 • God’s glory and holiness, God’s will and plans in this life, Daily provision, Forgiveness of others, Forgiveness of self, Deliverance from temptation and Satan • James 1:5 • Wisdom • Ephesians 3:14-21 • Strengthened inner man, comprehension of God’s infinite love, and understanding of the fullness of God’s Power • Hebrews 4:16 • Mercy and Grace for our needs

  9. Making a Plan • Plan a Time • Plan a Place • Make a List • Begin with Scripture • Make yourself accountable • What on this list will be the most difficult to do?

  10. The High Hurdles of Aerobic Kneeling • Aerobic kneeling comes under the category of spiritual discipline. It takes time to develop any kind of discipline. As you attempt to pray, you will encounter boredom, frustration, and monotony. As you attempt to develop these disciplines, you will encounter resistance • What habits have you effectively brought into your life? What did it take to be successful. What habits have you fallen out of? What happened? • What are some of the high hurdles that you will have in keeping or starting the habit of praying?

  11. Homework for Next Week • Complete Chapter 6 (Reading and review study questions and be prepared to discuss) • Have a personal time with God in prayer and Bible Study at least 5 times this next week • Have a family time with God 3 times this next week. • Pray with at least one other man in this PointMan group over the next week!
