Essay vs. Commentary • Essay is traditional – 4-5 paragraphs based on IDEAS • Essay has ONE main idea and 2-3 body paragraphs • Each paragraph explains one idea • So essay is ORGANIZED BY IDEAS • Commentary is a chance to COMMENT on ALL you can find in the text • Commentary has many ideas, so you will have MORE PARAGRAPHS • Best is to break the text into logical sections (by FTI, characters etc.) • So commentary is ORGANIZED BY SECTION • (WARNING – don’t retell PLOT of each section - instead use IQC and comment on the FTI of each section)
