  1. Stuck In A Nakabandi? What Should You Do? The Perfect Bike Document Checklist! Getting stuck up in a Nakabandi is not new—we’ve all faced this and it helps keep the law enforced by our police force. Awareness of the bike documents checklist can save the day for you and let you pass through breezily. Let us now understand the logic behind the Nakabandi and what you should do in case you are stuck up. It is the duty and responsibility of the police to maintain law and order. This can entail setting up roadblocks or Nakabandi as they refer to in the colloquial language to check the vehicles at random. Now, the question arises as to what you should do & what bike documents checklist you should take care off when stuck up at a Nakabandi. We shall see how to tackle the situation in the smoothest manner possible. Bikers don’t achieve anything by dodging the police. After all, the purpose of the Nakabandi is to ensure safety only. Instead of running away, one should cooperate with police in understanding & spreading awareness about traffic safety precautions. Documents verification is major part of checking by police in addition to check for driving without helmet and other traffic offences. If you have all the answers, you’ll be let to go on your business. No fines, no problems. Ignorance is never an excuse: Every law-abiding citizen is bound to know the law. Ignorance of the rules is never an excuse. Hence, it is better to know the powers vested in a traffic police official. It is also important to know your rights so that no one short- changes you in any way. Let us see what the police officer can do in a Nakabandi.

  2. The Motor Vehicles Act empowers the traffic police officer to check your vehicle documents such as registration certificate, insurance policy, PUC certificate, and your personal documents like driving license at any time. Section 130 of the Motor Vehicles Act is very clear when it states that you should produce the documents in front of a traffic police officer when demanded. This is where your rights come in. Note that the Act requires you to produce the documents on demand and not hand it over. If the situation demands to hand over the documents, you have the right to demand a receipt for the same. The police are duty bound to accede to this demand. The Motor Vehicles Act empowers the traffic officer to inspect the documents so produced before him and penalise you in case of any shortcomings/defects in the documents so produced. The traffic police officer has the rights to impound your driving licence and other vehicle documents in case the situation demands the same. The transport police official has the right to ask you to subject to a breath analyser test in case he suspects you are driving under the influence of alcohol. The police officer on duty and in uniform has the powers to arrest you in case you are driving dangerously or under the influence of alcohol. Note that he does not require a warrant to do so. What should you do when confronted by a traffic police officer at a Nakabandi? The first thing you should do is smile, greet them (they’re standing in the heat and pollution, so a little kindness goes a long way) and to obey their instructions and park your vehicle in a safe corner. You should produce all the documents demanded by the traffic police officer. He has the right to do the bike insurance check. Normally, he asks for the driving licence and the other vehicle documents. If all the documents are in order, there is no need to worry at all. Never argue with a traffic policeman. There are offences that you commit unknowingly. It is better to explain to the traffic official the genuine reason

  3. behind breaking a rule if at all. The laws stipulate that both the rider and the pillion rider should wear helmets. Similarly, you cannot have more than one pillion rider on your bike. These are offences and you have to pay the requisite fines as listed out in the Motor Vehicles Act. In case the traffic constable confiscates your licence, you can compound the offence by paying the requisite fine to the jurisdictional police officer. In case the confiscating officer is of the rank of sub-inspector and above, you can compound the offence on the spot by paying the fine. The various fines you can incur for traffic violations at a Nakabandi You can have an exhaustive list of traffic fines at https://www.dhflinsurance.com/various-traffic-fines-face-motorbiker/ . Keep a copy of the various fines that you can incur along with your bike documents checklist. No one can short-change you in the process. Questions that a police officer generally asks you at a Nakabandi •Show me your driving license and other vehicle documents. •Why are you not wearing your helmet? (in case he catches you bare-headed) •Why are you driving with more than one pillion rider? (in case you are riding triples) •From where are you coming? Where do you stay? What are you doing at this odd hour? (in case it is past normal driving hours) Things that the traffic police cannot do •They cannot take out the keys of your vehicle illegally. •The police officer can penalise you only if he is in the possession of a challan book or e-challan machine. •Traffic constables cannot ask for spot fines. You need a policeman of the rank of ASI or above to fine you on the spot. •In case you are a woman, you can ask for a lady constable if you are stuck up after 6.30 in the evening.

  4. Bike Documents checklist: You should be able to produce the following documents in original. •Driving licence •PUC Certificate You are allowed to carry the copies of the RC book and insurance. Today, you have facilities of storing them in a digital format. If you are able to produce them digitally, the police officer has to accept them as genuine. One should always carry a valid and effective driving license. Do ensure that your license is not expired and it is valid for the class of vehicle you are driving. You can renew your license within 30 days of its expiry. New MV rule will allow you to do so for renewal within a year of expiry. The registration validity of a vehicle is 15 years. Do ensure that your registration is valid. In case your vehicle is more than 15 years old then do get the renewal of registration done from transport authority by paying applicable fees and producing vehicle for inspection. It is always better to have your bike documents checklist along with you. In this way, you will be able to keep track of the documents produced before the police officer. Have the bike insurance in force. The bike insurance cost is not very high. The fine that you have to pay in case you do not have the insurance policy is higher than the annual premium. Having these bike documents checklist in order can help you sail through every police Nakabandi with ease.
