What Ideology?

  • Alexander III was a conservative idealist…

    • He repressed his opponents

    • He undid his father’s reforms

    • He restored Russia’s position international and also Russia’s identity

  • All of these things were conservative actions because he went to old policies and undid reforms which in other words was an anti-liberal act.

  • Did he change his ideology?

    • No, it seems like every time something happened he became more brutal than less which made him more conservative… Other leaders would have made a reform to appease the people, he didn’t.

What is Russification?

  • It was a was a name to a policy of Alexander III

  • The first intent of Russification was that all Tsars had to accept all ethnic groups within the empire because they were the Tsar’s subjects no matter what nationality they were

  • Alexander III had his own belief on this which was that all cultures and nationalities within the empire should be wiped out and everyone should become “Great Russians”

    • This meant that all ethnic groups had to be loyal to their country and tsar because Russification had no time for small ethnic groups to worry about themselves
