Aims of the evening: • Share our core expectations • Explain some changes to the way GCSEs will be graded from 2017 • Share and explain how target grades are set for students in Year 8 • Suggest ways that you, and we can support your child’s achievement • Remind you about key points of contact for Year 8 parents

  3. Our core expectations of every student

  4. Levels, Grades, Targets Year 8 • Levels have changed; Year 6 are not given a National Curriculum level • We are not going to be using levels • We will be using GCSE levels/grades for all years from 7-9

  5. Exams in Year 11

  6. Curriculum support • Year 8 will choose 4 GCSE or vocational subjects in Year 8 • GCSE pathways will start in Year 9

  7. A*-G versus 9-1 grades

  8. What are students aiming for? • GCSE grades 9-1(&Foundation) • Perhaps 10 GCSEs graded 9 and 8s • Perhaps 5 GCSEs graded 5 and above including 5s in English and maths? • The very best they can achieve!

  9. Targets • A grade that should be achieved by the end of Year 8 - an end of year target • Based on levels at Key Stage 2 • Individual targets for each subject • Challenging but achievable

  10. Reports/Progress Updates • All students will be assessed against GCSE grades • Year 8 will receive Progress Updates once per term including Attitude to Learning grades • Attendance will be reported

Key changes • National Curriculum levels no longer exist • GCSE grades will have changed from A*-G to 9-1(& Foundation) by the end of 2018. • We will assess all students against the new GCSE grade criteria • Targets and progress will be reports using numbered grades • Year 8 students will choose their GCSE options in Y8

Supporting your child • Discuss their end of year target grade and progress updates • Looking at work set on Show My Homework and in their planners • Encourage your child to do personal study, prep and reading at home • Emphasise the importance of good attendance • Contacting the school (form tutor in the first instance) if you have a concern

Attendance • Any student with 90% attendance is classed as persistently absent from school • Haileybury Turnford will continue to work with A10 Hertfordshire County Attendance Team who will have the responsibility to enforce school attendance and will issue penalty notices including court action where necessary

How can you support your child? • Check planners weekly • Ask your child – what was their experience of school like today, what did they enjoy, what have they learnt? • Encourage your child to complete Prep (homework) • Encourage your child to read and keep up-to-date with current affairs • Encourage 100% attendance to school
