  1. uDu: Built for Speed Use the equipment (ruler, marble, meter stick & timer) to prove which of these two formulas is correct: Speed = Distance • Time Speed = Distance / Time

  2. uDu: Built for Speed • Data: Times (in sec) to travel 100 cm at different speeds (ramp heights) • Suppose S = D • T … “D • T” is higher for lower ramps = FAIL!

  3. uDu: Built for Speed • Suppose S = D / T … “D / T” is higher for higher ramps = JOY!

  4. uDu: Built for Speed • Use the equipment (ruler, marble, meter stick & timer) to OBSERVE how distance and/or time changes when an object changes speed. • Use the wrinkly part of your brain to HYPOTHESIZE a FORMULA for velocity. Think it through, don’t just try to remember from last year. • Make EXPERIMENTAL measurements of whatever you need in your formula, and then calculate the velocities using your formula. • Check your calculations to CONCLUDE whether your formula is brilliant or completely stupid. Example: If the marble seemed to roll twice as fast, did the formula give twice as big a number?

  5. uDu: Built for Speed • O: Faster = more distance in less time • H: Velocity = distance / time • E: Roll marble down different ramps and time how long it takes to go 1 meter. Data • C: My formula is bloody brilliant. The calculated velocity goes up as the ramp gets steeper and the marble moves faster.
