    5. Efficiency Improvement through Higher Parameters It is known that the increase in Pressure & Temperature increases the thermal Efficiency. In a thermodynamic Rankine Cycle, steam pressure above 224 ksc and temperature above 374 C are referred as supercritical parameters. The effect of Pressure & Temperature on thermal efficiency of rankine cycle is shown in the slide. Units with Pressure above 300 ksc are called ULTRA SUPERCRITICAL From this it can be concluded that the due to improved efficiencies, Supercritical & Ultra supercritical technologies reduce the environment impact by way of reduced coal consumption. NTPC has already adopted 247/ 565/593 steam parameters for Barh-II Super-critical units under construction : 8 Super-critical units under bulk tendering : 11 Out of 11, S/C units for NTPC: 9 Future planning for S/C units: 7 NTPC is also going for bulk tendering of 11 units of 660 MW with the above advanced super critical steam parameters. Study is underway to zero in on optimum USC steam parameters for upcoming 800 MW to 1000 MW unit size steam power plants.
