  1. Photosynthesis • Process where plants use energy from sunlight to make food • Reason why plants are called producers or autotrophs

  2. Plants take in the water that they need through their roots. • Plants take in the Carbon Dioxide that they need through tiny openings on the underside of their leaves called stomata.

  3. Plants release the oxygen that is produced through the stomata. • The glucose (or sugar) is used in the mitochondria to make energy.

  4. Reactants (what is needed) Carbon dioxide + water + energy (sun)  (CO2) (H2O) • Products (what is made) • Sugar + oxygen (C 6 H 12 O 6) + O 2

  5. Chemosynthesis: • When organisms are able to make food out of chemicals • Some bacteria can do this • In primitive earth, was way organisms were first able to make food • Eventually, led to the atmosphere having enough oxygen to support more life

  6. Most important thing made in photosynthesis: GLUCOSE (sugar), also referred to as food for the plant. • Added bonus (by-product): Oxygen is also made

  7. Cellular Respiration • Process where cells break down sugar to make energy (ATP) needed to survive • Supplies cells with all energy to perform life functions • Happens in all organisms (in mitochondria)

  8. Reactants (what is used) • Sugar + oxygen  (C6H12O6) (O2)

  9. Products (what is made) • Carbon dioxide + water + ATP (energy) • (CO2) (H2O) • ***is reverse reaction of photosynthesis***

  10. Respiration can be aerobic (uses oxygen) or anaerobic (no oxygen) • Aerobic makes more energy (38 ATP/sugar) • Anaerobic makes less energy (2ATP/sugar)

  11. Fermentation: • Type of anaerobic respiration • Sugar is broken down without oxygen • Creates lactic acid and ethyl alcohol • Occurs during strenuous activity
