  3. Physical Characteristics • “A peninsula of peninsulas” • Alpine System- Alps • Young, active mountains • Prone to earthquakes and volcanoes • Rhine River • Climate: Mostly Mid-latitude Mild

  4. Population Characteristics • High population density • 3rd Largest Cluster in the world • Almost 600 million people • Highly urbanized • Immigration • Over 1 million legal immigrants • Immigration Policies • “Law of the blood” vs. “Law of the soil”

  5. Population cont. • Slow Growth/No Growth • Why might this be a problem? • The Remedy? • Pay people to have babies! • The Baby Boom in France • Generous Maternity leave • Free child care • Short work hours, long vacations • Large family discounts

  6. Economic Characteristics • The Birthplace of Capitalism • Wealthy Core Area • But….Regional Differences • The Euro • Common Currency • Used by some, but not all members of the EU 1 USD = .77 Euros

  7. European Union • Works to promote economic cooperation and make trade easier by • Common currency • No tariffs for member-to-member trade • Set tax rate for all members • 27 member countries • 2 countries have chosen NOT to join • Problem: The EU is Lost in Translation!
