  1. Holographic TelevisionThe Future Is Here Andrea Gabbard ITMG 100 Section 6 November 12, 2013

  2. 3D Television • 3DTV TVs - two separate images and display them simultaneously • Send one image to your left eye and the other to your right • This makes it difficult for the eyes to focus • The image mixture appears as if it has depth • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ux6aD6vE9sk

  3. What is a Hologram? • A 3D imaged formed by interference of light beams form a laser or other light source • One is shined on the object one bypasses the object • The two meet and interfere on a piece of holographic film • Interference pattern etched onto a piece of holographic film. • When a laser is shined back onto the holographic film, it translates the interference pattern back into a 3D image

  4. Mark II • Stephen Benton began wok on the Mark II in 1989 • Acusto-optic modulation (AOM); laser, transducer, transparent surface. • Sound waves stretch the transparent surface changing how the light passes though it. • expensive material, tellurium dioxide in crystal form

  5. Daniel Smalley • Benton died in 2003 and his assistant becomes head of research team • Uses a similar concept to AOM • Much smaller surface; chip the size of a microscope slide • Lithium Niobate • Waveguides, more efficient use of light

  6. Television Displays Comparing 3 television technologies http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2013/cheap-color-holographic-video-0619.html

  7. The Future Is Here • Once science fiction now a reality • No jut for entertainment • Can be used in • Business • Biomedical • Surgery • So much more!
