  1. What does it mean to be alive? • By Nicolas Vasquez

  2. Thousands of things There are thousands of things for thousands of separate animals, fungi, bacterium, algae, and any other life form out there that would classify it as alive. There are some traits, however, that overlap with more animals than others. Therefore, us humans consider those traits to be what makes something alive.

  3. Human vs. Jellyfish

  4. Traits of humans • Active cardiovascular system • Warm body • Adaptation to environment • Requires fuel or energy • Made of cells

  5. Traits of jellyfish • Active loose web of nerves • Active stingers

  6. Dead human • No flowing blood • No flowing blood=cold body • Doesn't respond to anything • Has no need for fuel • Has inactive cells

  7. Dead jellyfish • Doesn't respond to anything • Active stingers

  8. Conclusion As we can see, here is almost nothing in common between a jellyfish and a human, and yet both of them are considered alive. Henceforth, we can conclude that there is no one trait that determines if something is alive or not

  9. Winner! ......Let's call it a draw.
