Iroquois Council • met each summer to discuss concerns • met in Onondaga territory – mid point • had previously been enemies; now joined and unified against outside enemies • would discuss conflicts and concerns • council opened with greeting the lords; offering praise and thanks for gifts of the earth; offering praise and thanks to the Great Creator of all things

  6. leaders must not engage in trivial matters; because their people must have respect for them • new lords to be initiated will have four strings of shells wampum as evidence of their pledge to the confederacy • the leaders of the council will announce the acceptance of the new lord • he will be crowned with the sacred emblem of the deer’s antlers
