  10. Preparing to Draw a Foundation or Basement Plan • Examine elevations and plot plan • Need for stepped footings or retaining walls • Identify grade problems • Determine size of footings and foundation • Check soil bearing capacity • Refer to local building codes

  11. Traditional Drawing Techniques • Steps for drawing a foundation plan and a basement plan are similar • Drawing techniques are the same for both • More information and additional steps are required for a basement plan

  12. Manual Drafting: Foundation Plan 1. Select scale (usually 1/4" = 1'-0") 2. Locate outline of foundation walls 3. Draw foundation walls, piers, and pilasters (posts) 4. Indicate breaks in foundation wall 5. Lay out and draw wall footings

  13. Manual Drafting: Foundation Plan 6. Draw footings for piers and columns (posts) 7. Draw footings for fireplace and chimney 8. Locate and draw supporting beam (if required) 9. Show size, spacing, and direction of joists or trusses 10. Identify location of section details

  14. Manual Drafting: Foundation Plan 11. Add dimensions to show size of all aspects of foundation 12. Letter any necessary notes 13. Add proper material symbols 14. Add title block, scale, and drawing name 15. Check drawing for accuracy and completeness

  15. Architecture Green • Green foundations • Fly ash in concrete • Pressure-treated lumber • Check local building codes

  16. Manual Drafting: Basement Plan 1. Select scale (usually 1/4" = 1'-0") 2. Draw exterior foundation 3. Draw footings for walls, chimney, fireplace, piers and columns (posts) 4. Locate and draw the beam and supports or bearing wall partition(s) 5. Design room layout in basement area, darken lines

  19. Partially Completed Basement Plan

  20. CADD Drawing Techniques • Drawing is created at full scale, 1'- 0" = 1'- 0", or 1:1 • Appropriate scale is applied when drawing is plotted

  21. CADD: Foundation or Basement Plan • Make copy of floor plan on new layer • Draw outside line of foundation walls, delete outside line of floor plan wall if they do not coincide 3. Draw all footings 4. Draw stairs, interior walls, windows, doors for basement plan
