  1. Faith Virtue Knowledge Godliness Perseverance Self - Control “Godliness” Speaker: Tracy Moyers A “Well-Rounded” Christian (2 Peter 1:5-11)

  2. Godliness • (God-like-ness) exemplifying a quality or state of being like God •  Can also be translated as holiness • Is defined as righteous, well-reverent, pious, devout or godly.

  3. Self-control is the application of knowledge to restrain from doing evil. Godliness is the application of knowledge in doing those things that are righteous.

  4. Godliness comes from a heart of true admiration • Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matt. 6:21) • God’s ways are higher (Isaiah 55:9) • God’s will is to be desired (Psalm 25:4; 42:1) • Meditate on whatever is true, noble, just, pure, lovely, etc… (Phil. 4:8-9)

  5. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matt. 6:21) • A tree is known by its fruits (Matt. 12:33-37) • We must not love the world or the things of the world (1 John 2:15) • If we love Him we will keep His Commandments (1 John 5:1-4)

  6. God’s Plan Has Never Changed • I will be your God if you will be my people • Ex 15:26; 19:4-6; Le 26:12; Jer 11:4,7; Jer. 31:31-34; Zech. 8:8 • Be Holy for I, the Lord your God, am holy. • Lev. 11:44-45; 19:2, 20:7, 2 Cor. 6:11-7:1; 1 Pet. 1:15-16; 1 Pet. 2:4-5

  7. God’s Plan Has Never Changed • Love the Lord with all your heart, soul and mind. (Deut 6:5; 10:12; 11:13, Joshua 22:5) Fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul

  8. God’s Plan Has Never Changed • Repeated by Jesus when asked, “What is the greatest commandment?” (Matt. 22:37; Mark 12:30 & Luke 10:27) And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.

  9. Characteristics of Godliness • Christians are a new creation and old things are gone (2 Cor. 5:17; Rom. 6:4-6) • Paul Teaches us to “put on” • New Man (Eph. 4:24; Col. 3:10) • Armor of light - cast of Darkness (Rom. 3:12) • The Lord Jesus - make no provision for the flesh (Rom. 3:14)

  10. Characteristics of Godliness • Paul Teaches us to “put on” • The whole armor of God (Eph. 6:11) • The breastplate of righteousness (Eph. 6:14) • Tender mercy and love (Col. 3:12-14)

  11. Characteristics of Godliness • Present our bodies as living sacrifices (Rom. 12) • Commit our members as slaves of righteousness (Rom. 16:9) • Exercise Godliness (1 Tim. 4:7-8) • Maintain purity (1 Thes. 4:1-8)

  12. Practical Examples • The Assembly • Speech • Clothing choices • Obscene jokes • Movies • Music • Behavior on dates • Civil law

  13. How do we create/maintain Godliness? • Godliness must be our first priority (Mat. 6:33, 7:5, 23:26) • Godliness requires diligence (Rom. 16:9) • Give *all* diligence (2 Pet. 1: 5, 10) Be Sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8)

  14. How do we create/maintain Godliness? • Godliness requires diligence (Rom. 16:9) • Give *all* diligence (2 Pet. 1:5, 10) For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lust we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age (Titus 2:11-12)

  15. How do we create/maintain Godliness? • Godliness requires knowledge (Rom. 16:9) • Through knowledge God gives us all things pertaining to life and godliness (2 Pet. 1:3) • How do we know how to be God-like? • Can we do it by reading the writings of really smart men? • Psalms 119:11, 105

  16. How do we create/maintain Godliness? • Godliness requires knowledge (Rom. 16:9) • We must desire to know His Word 1Pe 2:1-2 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,

  17. How do we create/maintain Godliness? • Godliness requires knowledge (Rom. 16:9) • It demands book, chapter and verse (Col. 3:17, 1 Tim. 6:3) 2Ti 3:16-17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

  18. Great Promises follow Godliness • The pursuit of righteousness, godliness, faith, etc… will lead to eternal life (1 Tim. 6:11-16) • Blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God (Matt. 5:8)

  19. Great Promises follow Godliness • God will protect the godly and judge the wicked • Remember Lot (2 Peter 2:7-9) • We are a part of a kingdom which can not be shaken (Hebrews 12:28-29) • Godliness with contentment is great gain (1 Tim. 6:6-10)

  20. Conclusion 2Pe 3:10-11 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness

  21. Conclusion • “Be like Mike” -> Be like God • Get to know him through His Word • Come to love him through His Word If you do this, you can be God-like.
