  4. META Europe UNIT 3 Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills

  5. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Objectives By the end of the unit you should be able to: • Understand the importance of student - centred, holistic teaching and learning in the context of community media courses • Design and plan a short teaching session • Use a range of different teaching methods and approaches for specialist interest groups • Experience a ´mini teaching exercise´ and get feedback on your work

  6. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills 5. Reflect, evaluate and incorporate changes 1. Identify Training needs    The Training Cycle 2. State Aims and Objectives 4.Teach   3.Design session plan

  7. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Training within Community Media (Radio) • is open to different people with different interests, knowledge, experience and time resources • offers different topics adapted to the different target groups •  examples of themes and topics •  journalistic know how •  program design • technical know how • best delivered consistently, over a period of time

  8. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Training within Community Media (Radio) People from different target groups: • learn to articulate themselves and their interests in public • learn about the way radio / the media is made • get a critical view towards the media and the consumption of media products

  9. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills What skills are useful if you want to train within a community radio setting? • Interest in and capacity for working with different people and target groups • Knowledge about and experience with group dynamics / working successfully within groups • Knowledge about and experience with different ways and methods of teaching and learning • Specialist knowledge within the wide field of radio production or broadcast journalism • You may not possess all these-some of the best training is done collaboratively!

  10. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Examples of different training situations: • One to one: one person observing another: “sitting with Nellie” • One to one: demonstrating • Small group work-informal • Workshop: one off session about specific topic, practically oriented • Short course: One day course, series of evening workshops • Community development: training taking place very informally over an open - ended period of time, within a community setting • Formal course-accredited by school, college, university or vocational body

  11. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Holistic model of community media training combines three elements: Media Awareness - e.g. knowledge of radio genres, the role of community radio in society Media Skills - creative, production, journalism and technical skills Media Identity - raising consciousness in of understanding relationship between identity and media and confidence to play a part in representing that identity through community media

  12. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills ‘Action-oriented’ media teaching and learning approach: • is based upon and refers to the learners' life experience • • can be structured so as to enthuse the participants • • takes a learner-centred approach • • supports learning through action • • is product-oriented – e.g. making a radio program

  13. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Approaches to teaching and learning developed by META Europe: • Tandem Training • Use of ‘Community Tutors’ • Approaches to working with specialist interest group (e.g .women) in community media

  14. Tandem partnerships

  15. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Tandem Training • Definition: • Work in a tandem = training partnership • Tandem = two indispensable parts of a whole • Cooperation between inter- professional teams: • Radio trainers and target group trainers to plan and • implement training projects for a target group on an • equal basis.

  16. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Working in a tandem implies: • mutual trust • mutual goals • a dynamic interaction

  17. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Training in a Tandem: Prerequisites • Radio trainer: • experienced in teaching radio skills • creative and technical elements of radio production • variety of methods for teaching • Target group trainer: • experienced in developing training programmes, recreational or creative activities for the respective group • familiar with the interests, needs and living circumstances of the target group

  18. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Training in a Tandem: Prerequisites Cooperation: • Can function well if • both partners are fully involved in the planning • the project is regarded as a mutual endeavour • it is clear who is competent and responsible for what tasks • there is background information for both, about: •  the group •  methods and aims of radio production work

  19. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Training in a Tandem: examples of methods • Preparatory workshop - for radio and target group trainers and others involved in target group (most preparation) • 2. Coaching -planning where target group • works withexperienced radio trainer to plan training (medium level of preparation) • 3. Checklist -The trainers forming a tandem use the method as a checklist for their planning (least preparation- recommended for experienced trainers)

  20. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Examples of training in tandem: • Female radio station worker in tandem with women’s education worker trainer based in women’s project • 2. Radio trainer working with social worker in old people’s home • 3. Radio producer working with youth worker in youth club • 4. Radio producer working with social worker and refugee representative in a refugee and asylum seeker drop- in centre • See handbook for further details • (handbook: “Training in a Tandem – A Planning Guide for Radio • workshops with Special Target Groups” / Mag Anu Pöyskö, Frank Hagen)

  21. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Community tutors • Using recent trainees as role models • "If we can do this - then so can you.“ • Example • People who had taken part in a year long community radio course became tutors for some of the following year’s introductory course sessions.

  22. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Some advantages of training with community tutors: Accessibility - being taught by people they knew and felt comfortable with Enthusiasm - The involvement and personal stories around how and why community tutors became involved in radio was a powerful way of encouraging other people Empathy - Until a short time ago they had been complete novices themselves- they were ideally placed to remember the hopes and fears they had themselves when first starting their own radio training. Building on existing skills - The process of designing the training day was a useful way for the community tutors to reflect on their own learning and build new skills.

  23. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Approaches to work with special interest groups in community media • Consider the barriers to training for that particular group • Design specific strategies to involve a specific target group • Ideas for course content and organisation • Case Study: Working with women in community media • (see also handbook) • (handbook: “Training in a Tandem – A Planning Guide for Radio • workshops with Special Target Groups” / Mag Anu Pöyskö, Frank Hagen)

  24. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Barriers to training for women: • Lack of childcare • Timing of course • Competition with other responsibilities • Lack of confidence • Lack of role models

  25. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Strategies: • Women - only courses and tutors • Working through partnerships (tandems) • Starting off with ‘taster courses’ and building up to more substantial courses

  26. META Europe UNIT 3 – Teaching The Trainers – learning and teaching skills Ideas for course content and organisation: • Involve participants in planning • Provide support for trainees (childcare, transport, expenses) • Hands-on training • Informal settings and atmosphere
