Additional Factors Contributing to the Shortage • The elderly population, a group with much greater than average healthcare needs, will grow faster than the total population between 2000 and 2010 • Advances in medical technology will continue to improve the survival rate of severely ill and injured patients, who will then need extensive therapy and care. • New technologies enable the identification and treatment of conditions not previously treatable

Turnover Rates Contribute to the Healthcare Worker Shortage • Additional openings will result as workers leave the labor force or transfer to other occupations. • High turnover due to low pay and status, poor benefits, low training requirements, and a high proportion of young and part-time workers, such as nursing, psychiatric, and home health aides. • In contrast, occupations with relatively few replacement openings, are those with high pay and status, lengthy training requirements, and a high proportion of full-time workers, such as physicians and surgeons.   14. CEDA-RobbinsBasic Nurse Assistant Course • Approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health • This 132-contact hour course is presented over 8 weeks • Prepares students to work in hospitals, nursing homes and home health agencies • Prerequisite for the Associate Degree Nursing Program

CEDA-RobbinsPhlebotomy Program • Approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical laboratory Sciences • This eight-credit program presents the basics of phlebotomy in a two semester course sequence; students take one course per semester • Prepares students to work in clinics, hospitals, physician’s offices and blood centers • Included as part of the medical office assistant, radiologic technology, and respiratory therapy curricula
