  2. Types of otters There are only basically three types of otters. Their names are the sea otter, river otter, and the regular otter. I will be telling you about all of the otters.

  3. What Otters do • The sea otter eats, sleeps, mates, and even gives birth at sea. It can remain under water for 4-5 minutes. When it dives for shellfish, such as mussels or avalone it also brings up a small rock, then it floats its back and crack the food on the small rock.

  4. Playfulness • Otters wrap themselves in kelp to keep from danger. Northern river otters are most known for their playfulness.

  5. What they look like and the size • The sea otters brown to black FUR is the finest and densest of an animal FUR! The record size of a river otter is 33 pounds and 54 inches! The average size is 18 pounds and 40 inches! The male otter is approximatley 17percent larger than females.

  6. Habbitat and what they eat • Otters live near water in lakes, rivers, and marshes. Otters do not make dens but they use natural shelter or old dens of other animals such as beaver or muskrat. Otters are found in maryland. River pray primarily on fish. At times crayfish and crabs, also comprise a major portion of their diet.

  7. Food • Infrequent food items include water bugs, young water fowl, snakes, frogs, mussels and even muskrats.

  8. Other facts • The river otter is the only otter found in maryland. Otters are near sighted above water. Sound, touch, and smell are very important senses that otters use to communicate with eachother.
