  2. What is Alexandrite? • Alexandrite is a gem named for Czar Alexander II. • It was first discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia in 1930.

  3. What is Alexandrite? • Alexandrite is rare. • It is much loved for its peculiar qualities.

  4. What Color is Alexandrite? • The gem can change from emerald green to ruby red. • It is known to change color according the light source.

  5. What to Expect with Alexandrite • Very few natural stones of gem quality are found each year. • The small sources mean that most of these gems are placed in Alexandrite rings.

  6. Changing Alexandrite • Depending on multiple factors, Alexandrite will have a color change between 0% and 100%. • These colors can range between browns and reds to greens and blues.

  7. The Cost of Alexandrite • Obviously, because of its rarity, Alexandrite can be expensive. • Alexandrite gems of exceptional quality sell for over $20,000 per carat.

  8. Synthetic Alexandrite • Because it’s so rare, synthetic forms of Alexandrite have been created. • These do not have the same color changing properties as natural alexandrite.

  9. Seeking Large Stones? • The largest Alexandrite stone ever found was 74.4 carats! • Large gems are hard to find though, and those that are set in natural Alexandrite jewelry don’t come cheap.

  10. One of a Kind • Alexandrite is a form of chrysoberyl, which doesn’t always change colors. • That’s why it’s more of a phenomenon than a gem, which is what makes it a one of a kind stone.
