  4. Causes of Dust Bowl • Drought in Great Plains • Overgrazing of livestock • Overplowing of fields • Destroyed natural grasses whose roots anchored the soil • Winds picked up dirt

  5. Effects of the Dust Bowl • Dust storms • Damaged farms in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, and N. Mexico • Crops buried under layers of dirt • Farmers and families moved to find work • Drove west to CA*** • CA towns become overcrowded • Families lived in shacks • Earned nickname “Oakies”
