  2. Supreme Court • Judicial Branch • Highest Court in the land • Decide arguments about the meaning of laws • Judge if laws follow Constitution Constitution = Rule Book Supreme Court = Referee • Final word on the laws

  3. Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857) • Scott sued for his freedom when his owner died

  4. You Be The Judge • A man named Dred Scott is suing for his freedom. His case has already been tried in Missouri, but he has made an appeal and now his case has made it to the Supreme Court! • Using Cooperative Group Roles (Recorder, Facilitator, Tracker, Reporter), you will be looking at the issues with the case and the facts about the case in order to make your ruling • Remember, not only do the judges have to make a ruling, but they have to defend their decision by using the facts of the case. • Be ready to share your groups ruling with the class!

Vansare the most popular shoe brand. • Evidence to Support- ONLY FACTS (cite from text) • Ex. I think Vans are the most popular shoe brand because more students at CS prefer vans than sketchers. • Reasoning-explain why the facts you chose as evidence support your answer (Explain citations) • Ex. The evidence supports my answer because if more students prefer Vans than sketchers, Vans must be more fashionable & trendy than Sketchers.

  6. Outcome • Remains a slave • Scott was property & therefore not a citizen • As property, Scott had no right to sue • No more laws to limit slavery b/c of slaveowner’s rights
