  5. Actual Definitions: Do they work? • “Activities directed toward or in support of the threat or use of acts of serious violence against persons or property for the purpose of achieving a political objective within Canada or a foreign state” • Canadian Security Intelligence Service

  6. Actual Definitions: Do they work? • “Premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against non-combatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents, usually intended to influence an audience” (“Non-Combatants” means civilians and unarmed military personnel) • US State Department

  14. Motivations for Terrorism • 1) Rational: • May have considered other methods for reaching a particular goal (but too much risk, or not effective) • Balance risk and effectiveness against its cost and benefits

  15. Motivations for Terrorism • 2) Psychological: • Sense of purpose in their lives that did not exist before • “True Believers” in the cause • Opponents =evil

  16. Motivations for Terrorism • Cultural Motivation • May join out of fear, important cultural or religious values are under threat • Protection of culture is a duty • *other people of that culture may not support their decision

  17. Research a Terrorist Attack • On page 371 in your textbook, pick a terrorist attack and explain what happened! • Google (date, and a few key words)
