  5. Warfare Most answers fall into 3 main categories: Realism Pacifism Just War Theory

  6. Warfare Realism: The view that moral standards are not applicable to war, and that it instead must be judged on how well it serves the state interest.

  7. Warfare Pacifism: The view that war is never morally permissible.

  8. Warfare Just War Theory: The doctrine that war may be morally permissible under stipulated conditions.

  9. Warfare Just War Theory: Concerned with 2 issues The justification for resorting to war. The moral permissibility of acts in war.

  10. The Justice of War The justification for resorting to war. Traditionally labeled, jus ad bellum or “the justice of war”. Going to war can be morally justified only if certain requirements are met.

  11. The Justice of War The cause must be just. The war must be sanctioned by proper authority. The war should be fought with the right intentions. Armed conflict should be a last resort. The good resulting from war must be proportional to the bad. There must be a reasonable chance of success.

  12. Justice In War The moral permissibility of acts in war. Traditionally labeled Jus in bello or “justice in war”.

  13. Justice In War Discrimination: Those fighting a war must distinguish between combatants and noncombatants, never deliberately targeting the latter. Noncombatant Immunity: The status of a person who should not be intentionally attacked in war.
