Event History & Description History of Juneteenth in the U.S. • Juneteenth or June 19, 1865, is considered the date when the last slaves in America were notified of their freedom in Texas, more than 2 ½ years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. • Annually more than 200 cities in the United State celebrate Juneteenth. • Juneteenth serves as a historical milestone reminding Americans of the triumph of the human spirit, the end of slavery and ultimately, FREEDOM.

  3. Event History & Description Description of Lawrence, Kansas Celebration The storied history of Kansas’ establishment as a “free state” and the City of Lawrence’s history of struggle and commitment to civil rights is a perfect place for a community-wide, multi-cultural celebration.

  7. Arts Day – Wednesday, June 16 • Poster Contest Objective: to encourage Lawrence youth in their creative pursuits and promote the arts. Goal: 1st place poster will be used as the central artwork theme for 2005 Juneteenth Celebration • Location – To be determined • Needs • Volunteers to serve as judges and adult facilitators • Sponsorships for materials, promotions and awards

  8. Arts Day continued – Wednesday, June 16 • Essay Contest Objective: To encourage our youth in their creative pursuits and promote the arts. • Location – to be determined • Needs • Volunteers to serve as judges and adult facilitators • Sponsorships for materials, promotions and awards

  9. Arts Day continued – Wednesday, June 16 • Oral History Objective: To enlighten the community about the real life history of Lawrence residents. • Location – University of Kansas • Needs • Volunteers to serve as facilitators • Volunteers to give oral histories • Sponsorships for participant gifts

  10. Sports Day – Thursday, June 17and Friday, June 18 • 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament Objective: To encourage teambuilding and good sportsmanship. • Location – (Friday) East Lawrence Center at 1245 E. 15th St. 785-832-7950; • Needs • Volunteers to oversee tournament • Sponsorships for tournament costs

  11. Family Day – Saturday, June 19 • Festival at Burcham Park Objective: To provide an entertaining day of family fun in downtown Lawrence. Carnival will include food, art/gifts and information vendors, games (moonwalk) and music. Goal of 30 vendors. • Location – Burcham Park • Needs • Vendors for carnival ($100-$250 Fees) Confirmed vendors to date: Grandaddys BBQ; DaShop; Flora Taylor; HyVee; Sertoma Club

  12. Day of Remembrance – Sunday, June 20 • Father’s Day Prayer Breakfast • Location – Tentative: Victory Bible Church from 7:00 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. • Needs • Sponsorship for food items • Volunteers to serve and prepare food
