  5. 2004 promotion response to date • 2004 all new members about 50% of last year’s volume through Jan; improved to 62% through May • Decline in FY new member promotion response • Sept omnibus efforts from 0.8% to 0.4% (no books) • Oct IT-focus promotion from 0.7% to 0.3% (no books) • Dec omnibus effort from 0.5% to 0.3% (with books) • Intentionally sacrificed some response to boost subs per order Membership Status Report; G. Factors influencing response • Dues increase impact (+15% for affiliates, 5% full members but 13.5% for CS dues, 4% for students)? • Fatigue in distance learning program interest? • Low demand for new periodicals • Books aren’t boosting membership at the same rate as distance learning program did when it launched (doubled response from 0.5% to 1.0%) • Larger % of IEEE drops compared to 2002 5% vs. 4% • Smaller % of full and affiliate non-renewals compared to 2003 - 20% vs. 22% Membership Status Report; G.   7. 2004 budget and impressions • Budget objective of flat is not likely to be achieved • Going over $100 in August for affiliates may further suppress new member response • Half-year promotion response not final yet, but it appears we are seeing a small boost • Forecasting decline at year end of 7.7% or ~92,000 members • 2005 budget forecast of -4.4% or 88,000 Membership Status Report; G.
