  3. Formulas for Ionic Compounds • Ionic compounds will bond in a ratio that cancels their ion charge • ALL compounds no matter what are neutral

  4. Ionic Dot Diagrams! • Draw the Lewis Dot Structures for each individual atom. • Then draw an arrow showing the electron that will leave the cation(s) and where it will join the anion(s). • Next, redraw the atoms and include their new number of valence of electrons and their charge.

  6. Steps for Covalent Dot Structures • Add up total number of valence electrons. • Draw a skeleton (put the central atom in the center). • Distribute the electrons as PAIRS. Start from the outside and move inward. • Count and adjust electrons until each element has 8 (except Hydrogen which can only have two). **NOTE: If you do not have enough valence electrons, try using double or triple bonds. (only oxygen, sulfur, carbon and nitrogen can form double and triple bonds).

  12. Prove to me you know this… • Determine if the bond will be covalent or ionic and then draw the dot diagram for the compound. Remember, if it’s ionic you must draw the transfer of electrons and include the charges. If it’s covalent, make sure to draw circles around the shared electrons. • 2 Hydrogen + 1 Selenium • 3 Lithium + 1 Nitrogen • Oxygen and Oxygen
