University of Colombo • Founded in 1921 the University of Colombo is the oldest higher education institution in Sri Lanka . • It is ranked number 01 in Sri Lanka and 1001 internationally. • The University has • 09 faculties  • 56 Departments, • 01 Campus & 01computer School, • 7 Institutes and 8 Centres and Units.  • The university engages in international collaborations with over 76 international academic partners.

Degrees offered and research Interests • It offers under graduate and post-graduate degrees including Master in Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy in Social Sciences, Education, Law, Management and Finance, Medicine, Science, Technology and Nursing. • The prioritized research areas range from • Agro-technology • Basic Sciences • Computer Science & Information Technology • Engineering Sciences & Architecture • Social Sciences • Policy Studies and Technology.

Social Policy Analysis and Research Centre (SPARC)  • The Social Policy Analysis and Research Centre (SPARC) of the Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo, provides a focal point within the Sri Lankan University system to integrate research, teaching, training, policy analysis and advocacy on critical areas of social and economic development. • The centre facilitates close collaboration between academics and institutions outside of the University system, including governmental as well as non-governmental agencies that are dealing with issues related to social policy.

Objectives of SPARC • To facilitate and institutionalize independent research within Sri Lankan Universities on social development related issues. • To facilitate interdisciplinary exchange and dialogue between scholars from different disciplines and backgrounds. • To provide training and capacity building to improve the quality and relevance of social science education. • To identify opportunities for social policy reforms in Sri Lanka.

  7. The Project Team • Dr. Nishara Fernando (Head, Department of Sociology / Director , SPARC) Dr.Nishara Fernando received his Bachelors’ Degree in Sociology from the University of Colombo. He holds a Master of Philosophy Degree in Sociology from the University of Colombo, a Postgraduate Diploma in Social Statistics from the University of La Trobe, and the PhD from the University of Bonn, Germany. Professor LasanthaManawadu (Head, Department of Geography & Director of Computer Unit) Professor Manawadu is the Head of department of Geography and his research interest areas include Climate Change Homegardening , Disaster Management and Hydrology. Professor Manawadu is also an leading expert in the field of remote sensing and GIS mapping in the country.

The Project Team – Contd. • Ms. Nedha de Silva (Lecturer, Department of Sociology) Fields of expertise lie in Psychology, consumerism, education and youth Emeritus Professor SiriHettige (Department of Sociology) He complted undergraduate education in Colombo and obtained his Ph.D. in social anthropology from Monash University, Australia in 1980. He is currently affiliated to Melbourne University as an Honorary Principal Fellow. His research and publications cover a wide array of subjects such as labour migration, sociology of education, sociology of youth and social policy. He is also an Adjunct Professor at RMIT Universiy, Australia.

Why BECK is important to us/institution ? • Involving in the BECK project would allow UOC to actively contribute to the existing knowledge and influence national level policies on energy efficiency, sustainability and Climate change while creating close networks with globally renowned universities representing multiple regions of the world. 2. The BECK project would create opportunities for the academics of the university to receive trainings on new teaching techniques and on using ICT based practices. 3. The UOC will be benefited by the contribution of internationally recognized subject experts in updating the existing curriculums to suit the needs of the modern world.

What value can we/the institution add to BECK? • Ability to contribute with expertise in varied disciplines in the social sciences with specific emphasis on Sociology, Geography and Psychology. • Contributing to the multidisciplinary attribute of the BECK Project • Bringing in the experiences of Sri Lanka to the project specifically contributing to the practical application of the project outcomes • Contribute to the sustainability goals of the project outcomes by contributing the resources available at the university including libraries, websites and online platforms
