  3. Objectives • You will soon be on your own in managing your own affairs • What you do not want to do is to dig a hole right off the bat • Introduce strategies on how to not shoot yourself in the foot financially

  4. Statistics • Why we want you to be successful with money: • Rise in 18-25 year olds moving back in with parents • Average student has over $3,000 in credit card debt (@ high interest rates) • 10% of students owe $10,000 or more in credit card debt • At age 20 if you save $200.00 a month at 10% interest you will be a millionaire by the age of 55.

  5. Lessons • Avoid Debt at all costs • Car Debt – Why do you need a nice car? • Credit Card Debt – Use a debit card • Student Loan Debt – What if you can’t find a job? • Prepare for rainy days; Murphy repellant • Do you want your money to work for you? If so, establish a BUDGET

  6. Budgeting • Why do you need a budget? • Tells your money what to do • Avoidance of debt • Preparing for a rainy day • Stress Reducer • Directs where you want to go with your life. What is important to you.

  7. College Money Tips • Don't drink, smoke, or do drugs. • Buy used textbooks whenever possible, and sell the ones you no longer need. • Don't be tempted by your friends' spending habits. (Don’t keep up with the Jones) • Shop smart when buying groceries and household items. Use coupons. Shop the sales. Stock up on discounted non-perishable items. Foods like milk, butter, and cheese can be frozen. Drink water. Do not spend money on snack machines. • Shop smart when buying clothes. Do not pay retail prices. Shop thrift stores, consignment shops, yard sales, clearance racks, and buy during off seasons. Don't buy any item that requires dry cleaning. Consider consigning your own clothes to earn some money.

  8. Closing • Money brings security and the ability to give – Money problems bring unhappiness • Money problems can stay with you for the rest of your life • Top reason for divorce is financial. Finances affects everything else in your life
