  2. Attenuation- the decrease in the intensity of light over distance (depth in the ocean) • As light pass through water it is absorbed and scattered by water molecules and suspended particles • Light colors with shorter wavelength and more energy penetrate deeper

  4. Sound • Sound travels farther and faster in water • 1,500 m/s in water; 334 m/s in air • High-frequency sounds do not travel as far as lo-frequency sounds • Echolocation- use of sound by some animals to locate objects in water
