  1. JEAN DONOVAN Shannon Dolan

  2. EARLY LIFE • Born April 10, 1953 • Parents were Patricia and Raymond Donovan • Had a brother Michael • Lived in Westport, Connecticut • Went to Mary Washington College in Virginia

  3. After College • She worked for Arthur Anderson a nationwide accounting firm • She spent a year in Ireland for as an exchange student • There she was in contact with a priest from Peru • He told her “not to waste her life pursuing money but, to pursue a life devoted God and serving the poor.” • In 1977 she quit her job at the accounting firm, gave away her earthly possessions and joined the Cleveland Diocese and Maryknoll Lay Mission • a program to help the poor in El Salvador

  4. LIFE IN EL SALVADOR • In July of 1977 she went to El Salvador and worked in the village of La Libertab (near the Pacific Ocean) • She served at a parish managing its budget, played with children, and helped church workers • El Salvador’s government was in the middle of a Civil War during her time there • She spent a lot of time picking up dead bodies and looking for disappeared loved ones • She said she found hope in Archbishop Oscar Romero’s homilies • One day he was shot in the middle of saying mass • She attended his funeral where the government came in and set off a bomb killing 30 people

  5. Jean’s Courage • In September of 1980 she took a six week vacation and traveled to Miami, London, Ireland, New York, and Cleveland • She went to see her family and friends and to get away from the war in El Salvador • When she returned the peace corps left and she said that the dangers are extreme and that they were right to leave. • She now felt nervous being there because of how dangerous it was • She decided to leave many times but she knew she couldn’t because of the people and children that needed her help

  6. HER TRAGIC DEATH • On December 2nd Jean and her friend Dorothy went to the airport to pick up their two friends Ita and Maura • On their way back from the airport they were stopped by five National Guard members and taken to an isolated spot where they were beaten, raped, and shot by the men • Two days later their bodies were discovered in a grave about 15 miles away • Jean was only 27 years old and the US state department charged the Donovan family $3500.00 to have Jean’s body returned to them

  7. Jean is someone who people should admire because she lived her life how God wants everyone to • Jean is considered a martyr because of her courage and devotion to God • There were many chances for Jean to escape El Salvador but she stayed there because she knew it was the right thing to do • There are not many people in the world that would be willing to do what Jean did • She gave up her family, friends, and possessions to help the less fortunate people in El Salvador and she even gave up her own life for them.

  8. Jean is someone we should look up to for inspiration • Whenever things get tough in our life we should always think about Jean’s courage and the suffering that she went through • She is considered a martyr because she was murdered while working in El Salvador even though she had many opportunities of leaving but she knew the people there needed her help
