Memory Verse • The Roman Road: The Plan of Salvation • “For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” – Romans 10:10 • What does this verse tell us? • Twin actions that enable us to claim salvation • For the whole context, read Romans 10:5-29.

  3. Deborah’s Context • Read Judges 2:6-23 out loud together. • Joshua’s generation was faithful • Next generation did not complete the conquest of the Promised Land • Israelites turned to serve idols • God did not give them victory over their enemies • God appointed judges to govern the people

  4. Deborah’s Story • Read Judges 4:1-24 out loud together. • Israel oppressed by Jabin, King of Canaan • Deborah appointed judge over Israel • Barak ordered to take out Jabin’s army, led by Sisera • Barak defeated Sisera’s army, Sisera escaped • Jael, wife of Heber, killed Sisera with a tent peg

  5. Deborah’s Song of Praise • Read Judges 5:1-31 out loud together. • Song of celebration and thanksgiving • Praises the Lord • Recaps recent events

  6. Discussion Points • Israel’s cycle of rebellion (Judges 2:6-23) • How do we get sucked into the same cycle? • Women in leadership (Judges 4) • Where were all the men? • Barak’s request (Judges 2:8) • Was it cowardice or did he recognize God’s presence? • Jael’s rationale for killing Sisera (Judges 4:17-22) • Did she recognize God’s people or was she unknowingly used by God?

  7. Wrap Up • Which part(s) of Deborah’s story can you identify with? • How can we use Deborah’s story to better know, love, obey, serve, and worship God?
