  1. SHOM Multibeam bathymetric data processing and quality assurance and control

  2. Outline • SHOM bathymetric data • ISO 9001:2000 certification • « MBES system » concept • System qualification • Configuration control • Quality assurance and control

  3. SHOM bathymetric data • Goals / products • Nautical charts and navigation aid documents • constraints : navigation safety (bathymetry and position accuracies) – bottom feature detection and positioning • Special bathymetric product for Navy • Shallow waters : REA, mine countermeasure warfare • Deep waters : Submarine and antisubmarine warfare.

  4. SHOM bathymetric data • The most important constraints (data density, accuracy, feature detection and shallowest depth measurement) are given by : • Navigation safety requirements • IHO - S 44 and SHOM standards.

  5. SHOM ISO 9001 : 2000 certification • Priority on safety navigation related processes. • SHOM certified in 03/2004 for these processes. • Induced requirement to standardize the multibeam bathymetric surveys control. • Standardization based on : • “MBES system concept”, including acoustic and electronic hardware, ancillary sensors hardware and software, signal processing and real time software, post-processing software, maintenance and configuration control, training, documentation ; • Operational use decision (DMS) by SHOM director for each new system

  6. « MBES system » components • A MBES system is made of : • the MBES itself : • transducer(s), • signal processing and beamforming software, • real time software and associated computers, • motion sensor(s), including hard and software ; • interface definition with ancillary sensors : GPS, sound velocity • all the installation parameters of the system • Post-processing software.

  7. SHOM MBES systems • EM1002 on BH2 ships : 3 systems • EM1002 S on Beautemps-Beaupré : 1 system • EM120 on Beautemps Beaupré : 1 system • EM3000 on Fassmer launch : 3 systems (to be upgraded) • EM3002 on Fassmer launch : 3 systems, (total 7 planned) • FS 20 on VH90 launch : 1 system • Reson 7150 LF/HF Pourquoi pas? : 1 system (end 2005) • Reson 7111 Pourquoi pas? : 1 system (end 2005) • Post-processing software : Caris HIPS/GIS - CARAIBES

  8. Quality Control System integrity System delivering Calibration and SHOM specified sea acceptance trials 1st configuration registration Operational use decision (SHOM director) Operational use If system evolution : new configuration registration Software and hardware version number traceability If needed : new calibration Sea trials for each new version – Registration of trials results and conclusions Real time or processing software and hardware upgrade policy : if needed and periodically (once a year for EM1002 for instance). An evolution committee decides of the evolution If needed (breakdown, …) surveyor director can decide of the evolution

  9. Quality control – Data acquisition MBES system calibration and accuracy check Real time checks : Installation and runtime parameters Sidescan and MBES coverage Real time alarms (MBES and other sensors) Sound velocities changes Cross lines survey Calibration and acquisition data and metadata storage (digital or manual)

  10. Post-processingworkflow

  11. Quality assurance – CONCLUSION • Each step of the survey is linked to system performance checks and registrations of these checks; • Thus, global data traceability is achieved : measurement and post-processing system clearly identified, registration of each step of the measurement and processing workflow; • Data quality is insured. • If a non conformity is found : configuration control allows to isolate concerned data sets.
