  1. Energy in a Cell ATP – the energy molecule

  2. Vocab • ATP- adenosine triphosphate • ADP- adenosine diphosphate • AMP- adenosine monophosphate

  3. Cells perform functions that require energy: • Active transport • Cell division • Protein production

  4. Energy is stored in the molecule called ATP ATP Adenosine triphosphate

  5. AMP= adenosine monophosphate • ADP = adenosine diphosphate • It takes energy to add each phosphate. Lots of energy required to bind a third phosphate. Why? • Energy is available for work when ATP  ADP

  6. THE REALLY IMPORTANT SLIDE

  7. ATP  ADP, energy released Cell proteins have binding sites for ATP. Released energy is used for cellular work ADP is released from binding site to be recharged

  8. ATP is the cell’s energy currency. • Energy needed at the molecular level • Make proteins • Move ions against a concentration gradient • Building cell membranes and organelles • Maintaining homeostasis

  9. Copy these down and answer them in your notes • What processes in the cells need energy from ATP?

  10. Guess what – Read pgs 226-230 Answer Q 1-6 on pg 230. The first question in your homework has been done in class!

  11. More questions….. • How does ATP store energy? • How can ADP be “recycled” to form ATP again? • How do proteins in your cells access the energy stored in ATP? • Phosphate groups in ATP repel each other because they have negative charges. What charge might be present in the ATP binding site of proteins to attract another ATP molecule?
