  1. Risk Factors of Obesity

  2. Introduction Although obesity may not always have fixed causes, it does have certain risk factors which might increase an individual’s risk of developing the disorder. Let us briefly look at these risk factors:

  3. Genes • Genes play an important role in affecting the amount of fat an individual’s body may store. • It plays an important role in how that fat is efficiently used or converted into energy

  4. Inactive Lifestyle • Staying physically inactive means that the calories that one consumes are not converted into energy and, thus, stored as fat. • Sedentary lifestyle can often cause this. • Several diseases like arthritis can also decrease one’s physical activities

  5. Medications • Certain medications lead to weight gain, but any such effect may vary from individual to individual. • If the medication increases weight and makes one obese, they should consult their doctor about it.

  6. Age & Lack of Sleep • Although one can be affected by obesity at any age, as an individual ages their risk of developing obesity increases. • This is because of the hormonal changes in the body. • The muscle mass of an individual tend to decrease with age. This, in return, decreases metabolism. • Getting insufficient or excess sleep leads to hormonal changes in one’s body, this leads to increase in appetite. • This may also make an individual crave food rich in carbohydras and calories. It subsequently leads to weight gain.

  7. When to Visit a Doctor If you notice any of these symptoms in you or someone you know, then you should immediately consult a doctor. There are several good doctors for obesity in Delhi, and other cities of India where one can go.
