  9. Sixth Framework Programme- Main components - STRENGTHENING the foundations of the European Research Area FOCUSING and INTEGRATING European research STRUCTURING the European Research Area • BASIC PRINCIPLES Structuring effect : through a stronger link with national, regional and other European initiatives Coordination - Simplification Concentration: on selected priority research areas

  10. Sixth Framework Programme (EC)

  11. Sixth Framework Programme

  12. The 7 thematic priorities 2. Information Society technologies (3600MEuro ) 2.i. Applied IST research addressing major societal challenges:“for cultural heritage - intelligent systems for dynamic access to and preservation of tangible and intangible cultural and scientific resources”

  13. The 7 thematic priorities 3. Nanotechnologies and nanosciences, knowledge-based multifunctional materials, and new production processes and devices (1300MEuro ) • Nanotechnologies and nanosciences: long-term research, supramolecular architectures and macromolecules, nano-biotechnologies, applications in health, chemistry etc • Knowledge-based multifunctional materials: fundamental knowledge; production, transformation and processing technologies, etc • New production processes and devices: flexible and intelligent manufacturing systems, systems research and hazard control, clean and safe production, optimisation of life cycles, etc

  14. The 7 thematic priorities • Knowledge-based multifunctional materials:New high knowledge-content materials, providing new functionalities and improved performance, will be critical drivers of innovation in technologies, devices and systems, benefiting sustainable development and competitiveness in sectors such as transport, energy, medicine, electronics and construction. • Development of fundamental knowledge • Technologies associated with the production, transformation and processing of knowledge-based multifunctional materials, and bio-materials • Engineering support for materials development

  15. The 7 thematic priorities 6. Sustainable development and global change Sustainable energy systems (810MEuro): clean energy, energy savings, alternative motor fuels, fuel cells, energy carriers/transport/storage, etc Sustainable surface transport (610MEuro): environmentally friendly transport, interoperability, safety, etc Global change and ecosystems (700MEuro): greenhouse gas emissions, water cycle, biodiversity, natural disasters, land management, climate modelling, etc

  16. The 7 thematic priorities Sustainable energy systems: Research activities having an impact in the short and medium term: • Energy savings and energy efficiency, including those to be achieved through the use of renewable raw materials… focus on particular on Eco-Buildings to generate energy savings and improve environmental quality and quality of life….improving savings and efficiency mainly in the urban context, in particular in buildings ….including CHP and district heating/cooling systems, on-site production and use of renewable energy to improve energy efficiency in buildings.

  17. The 7 thematic priorities Sustainable energy systems: Research activities having an impact in the medium and longer term: • New and renewable energy sources, and new carriers such as hydrogen…..reduction in greenhouse gas emissions…. • Fuel cells, including their applications…replace in longer term a large part of current combustion systems in industry, buildings and road transport...

  18. « Integrating research »:Specific activities covering a wider field of research Supporting policies and anticipating scientific and technological needs (570MEuro) activities in support of EU policies and research responding to new and emerging needs (annual programming) Horizontal research activities involving SMEs (450MEuro): to boost technological capacities of SMEs in traditional or new areas and develop their ability to operate internationally (co-operative and collective research) Specific measures in support of international co-operation (300MEuro): developing countries, Mediterranean countries including the Western Balkans; Russia and the CIS

  19. « Integrating research »:Specific activities covering a wider field of research Supporting policies and anticipating scientific and technological needs (570MEuro): Policy oriented research (has 19 headings) including protection of cultural heritage and associated conservation strategies

  20. « Integrating research »:Specific activities covering a wider field of research Horizontal research activities involving SMEs (450MEuro): “to boost technological capacities of SMEs in traditional or new areas and develop their ability to operate internationally” (co-operative and collective research)

  21. International co-operation activities (300MEuro) • Participation of third countries in the thematic priorities • Specific activities (in support of the EU’s foreign policy and development aid policy), including for Mediterranean third countries, in support of the development of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership, issues relating to environment, health and water issues, as well as protection of the cultural heritage. Third countries : countries which are not members of the EU and not associated with the Framework Programme.

  22. Sixth Framework Programme

  23. « Structuring the ERA »: 4 categories of activities • Human resources and mobility (1630MEuro) • Host-driven actions: MC (Marie Curie) Research Training Networks, MC Host Fellowships for Early Stage Research Training, MC Host Fellowships for the Transfer of Knowledge, MC Conferences and Training Courses • Individual-driven actions: MC Intra-European Fellowships, MC Outgoing/Incoming International Fellowships, • Excellence promotion and recognition: MC Excellence Grants, MC Excellence Awards, MC Chairs • Return and reintegration mechanisms

  24. Sixth Framework Programme

  25. « Strengthening the foundations of ERA »: 2 categories of activities • Support for co-ordination of activities(280MEuro) • Co-ordination of national activitiesin areas such as: • Health: major diseases, diseases linked to poverty, development of European databases, co-ordination of clinical trials etc. • Biotechnology: non-health and non-food applications • Environment: urban environment, marine environment, seismic risk • Energy: new generation of power plants, energy storage etc. • Co-ordination at European level • Other co-operation frameworks (COST*, EUREKA** etc) • Joint initiatives of specialised European scientific organisations (CERN, ESA, ESO, EMBL etc) *Several COST networks involve cultural heritage, EUREKA has a cultural heritage umbrella project

  27. What can I do now?The 7 Thematic prioritiesAvailable Instruments:Networks of Excellence Integrated Projects Specific targeted research projects Co-ordination actions Specific support actions

  28. What can I do now?The 7 Priority Thematic Areas (Note 15% of the budget for SMEs). Identify interests, then network with other stakeholders relevant to the thematic priority. Perhaps be involved in potential Networks of Excellence or Integrated Projects Look out for Expressions of Interest on CORDIS from July 2002

  29. What can I do now?Policy oriented research “protection of cultural heritage” (Principal Instrument - Specific targeted research projects) Await priorities, which are not yet selected, then network with relevant stakeholders

  30. What can I do now?Horizontal research activitiesinvolving SMEs • Specific research projects for SMEs • Co-operative research projects undertaken for the benefit of a number of SMEs on themes of common interest SMEs network to identify common interests and be ready for call

  31. What can I do now?Horizontal research activitiesinvolving SMEs • Specific research projects for SMEs • Collective research projects carried out for industrial associations or industry groupings in sectors where SMEs are prominent Research organisations identify problems common to sector
