  5. Routines - Library Reading is one of the best ways to improve your child’s overall performance at school. Year 3 students are required to read at home for at least 20 minutes each night! Please encourage your child to read as often as possible. Library: Students need to bring their library bag on their allocated day so that they can borrow books from our library. Please see below for your child’s library day.

  6. Routines - Sport Sport plays a crucial role in our lives. It is important for students to maintain their physical, mental and social wellbeing. It not only keeps them active but also builds social and interpersonal skills. This year, our students will be participating in a number of sport programs. Please ensure your child is dressed in their full sport uniform on their sport day.

  7. Crunch and Sip & Birthdays Crunch and Sip: Please pack a fruit or vegetable for your child everyday as they are given time to have a break from their learning. Birthdays: We have a ‘No Party Policy’ at this school. We kindly ask that no cakes or lolly bags are brought to school. Birthday buckets can be purchased at the front office.

  8. Grade Page - online Information regarding our grade and school events will be uploaded online. Visit www.shaps.nsw.edu.au. More important information online include: • Permission notes • School calendar • Newsletter • School events • Policies

  9. Learning Support and Enrichment Students requiring addition support or enrichment are referred to our learning support unit. Parents will be contacted if a child needs to be referred to the learning support unit. Children are then observed, assessed and placed on intensive programs that aim to enhance their academic achievement. Teacher aids have allocated hours each week to assist the classroom teacher.

  11. Assessments Teachers will conduct assessments on a regular basis. If we have any concerns about your child’s learning, we will contact you to organise a meeting. Teachers will keep a record of your child’s results for reference.

  12. Naplan Year 3 students will complete the NAPLAN test in Term 2. This test assesses reading, spelling, writing, grammar and punctuation and numeracy. Teachers are currently preparing the students for this test. Please ensure your child understands the importance of this test. Ways to help your child prepare: • Complete all homework tasks by following the overview • Print off past papers and have them practise at home • Buy NAPLAN workbooks from Big W, Target, Newsagency and other book stores (these will not be marked) • Motivate and encourage your child using positive reinforcement.

  13. Homework Homework will be handed out on Friday and collected on Thursday. Please ensure your child completes all set tasks for homework. Your child MUST complete the weekly set tasks. Term 1 focus is NAPLAN.

  14. Excursions Year 3 students will attend one excursion and one incursion per year. These excursion align with the units they complete at school. The students will not pay as they payment is covered within the school fees. Term 2: Excursion Term 3: Incursion

  15. Chrome books This year your child will have a Chromebook and access to the internet at school to enhance their learning. As you may be aware, the jobs of the future you aspire for your child will require a strong understanding of technology and at SHAPS we want to give your child the opportunity to use these tools. Students will be receiving their computers early Term 2. Chromebook use will mainly consist of researching topics or creating content. Your child will be limited on what they can access to protect them from inappropriate material. Please ensure that your child charges their laptop every night and ensure that your child is safe whilst using technology by constantly monitoring them.

  16. Meetings with teachers If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning, please see your child’s classroom teacher. Please be aware that we are unable to discuss your child's progress or address any concerns during home time (3.10pm-3:30pm) as all teachers are required to supervise their classes. We encourage you to call the office to book an appointment with the classroom teacher. We will endeavour to answer your questions as promptly as we can.

  17. Parent Concerns Please follow the correct points in contact if you have any concerns that may affect your child’s wellbeing: • Classroom Teacher • Grade Leader • Deputy Principal • Principal. You may report to the Principal if the concern is a serious matter (Child Protection).
