  18. Pentecost Sunday: the Church’s BIRTHDAY Teammates June 9, 2019 Lee Bennett

  19. James Russell Lowell (19th Century) • “If you can find a place on this planet ten miles square, where a decent man can live in decency, comfort, and security, supporting and educating his children unspoiled and unpolluted, a place where age is reverenced, infancy respected, womanhood honored, and human life held in due regard, on this glove where the Gospel of Christ has not gone…

  20. James Russell Lowell (contd) • “and cleared the way and laid the foundations, and made decency and security possible, it will then be in order for the skeptical literati to move thither, and then ventilate their views. But as long as these men are very dependent on the religion which they discard for every privilege they enjoy,…”

  21. James Russell Lowell (contd) • “they may well hesitate a little before they seek to rob a Christian of his hope and humanity of its faith in that Saviour who alone has given to men that hope of eternal life which makes life tolerable and society possible, and robs death of its terrors and the grave of its gloom.”

  22. Jesus’ promise of the Holy Spirit • “then He opened their minds to understand the Scripture, and He said to them, ‘Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem…”

  23. Jesus’ promise of the Holy Spirit (contd) • “You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” Luke 24:45-49

  24. Table talk • Are you wearing your work clothes today? Have you been clothed with power “from on high?” If so, when did you realize it? In your opinion, are most Christians you know experiencing God’s power in their lives?

  25. HISTORY, NOT DOCTRINE: Acts 2 at Pentecost • And suddenly there came from heaven, a noise like a violent, rushing wind, that filled the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.

  26. Peter’s message • Refutes the charge of them being drunk • Refers to the prophecies in Joel, in the Psalms • Reminds them of JESUS’ life, ministry, death, resurrection, promise of sending His Spirit • Resounding call to repentance, baptism, gift of the Spirit • Response: 3,000 souls trusted in Christ, were baptized: THE CHURCH WAS BORN

  27. Table Talk • Your reactions to the story of the birth of the church: • Your questions about that story: So What? How does this relate to me? To us? How do I put on the “clothing” of God so I can worship, witness, and work under His guidance & power?

  28. Further teaching by the Holy Spirit • “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh & blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I say to you that you are Peter (petros) and upon this rock (petra) I will build My church; and the gates of Hades shall not overpower it.” Matt. 16:17-18

  29. Paul’s further explanation • “This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?” Gal. 3:3-4 • “And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’” Gal. 4:6

  30. Wrap up • Summary of what we have learned about the birthday of the church • Pentecost=daily/hourly Presence & power • Prayer of dismissal • Celebration of this special 1987th birthday!!!

  31. Doctrine/teaching on the Holy Spirit • “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.” I Cor. 12:13 • “However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.” Rom. 8:9

  32. for I love you! I leave you,
