  1. Bacteria Phyla

  2. Proteobacteria • - Largest and most diverse phylum • Contain genus Rhizobium – convert • nitrogen into ammonia • Contain genus Nitrosomnas –convert • ammonia to nitrite which allows • other bacteria to convert to nitrate • Contains genus Agrobacterium • causes tumors in plants • Rickettsiae causes Rocky Mtn. Fever • Helicobacter pylori causes stomach • ulcers • Species are enteric such as E. coli • make vitamin K and help enzymes • break down food • Contains genus Salmonella which • invades intestinal cells or creates • toxins

  3. Gram-Positive Bacteria • Most gram+ but some are gram – • Contains streptoccal species • causes strepthroat • Contains Clostridium botulinum • Contains Lactobacilli – creates • lactic acid turns milk soar and • used to make yogurt • Contains Bacillus anthrax – • biological weapon • Contains Actinomycetes used • to make antibiotics such as • tetracycline & Streptomycin • Contains genus Mycobacteria • causes tuberculosis and leprosy

  4. Cyanobacteria • Contain genus Anabaena which • form specialized cells called • heterocysts that convert nitrogen • into ammonia • Responsible for Oxygen rich • atmosphere

  5. Spirochetes • Gram negative bacteria • Some aerobic or anaerobic • Contains Treponemapallidum • causes Syphilis • Contains Borreliaburgdorferi • causes Lyme disease

  6. Chlamydia • Gram Negative • Coccoidal • Live only inside animal cells • Cell walls lack peptidoglycan • Chlamydia trachomatis causes • nongonococcal urethritis or • chlamydia
