3. Learning Goals We are / will be learning to… • Analyze the risks and benefits of human intervention (e.g. pesticide use, fish stocking, tree planting, etc.) • Analyze how climate change could impact the diversity of living things (e.g. Global warming, increase in precipitation) • Become familiar with terms such as: species diversity, structural diversity, bacteria, fungi, binomial nomenclature, morphology • Classify, apply, and draw dichotomous keys to identify and classify organisms according to kingdom • Explain concepts of taxonomic rank such as genus, species and taxon • Compare/contrast characteristics of prokaryotes, eukaryotes and viruses • Compare/contrast anatomical and physiological characteristics of organisms representative of each kingdom (in this case, Animals) • Explain structural and functional changes of organisms as they have evolved over time • Explain why biodiversity is important for maintaining viable ecosystems

Reminder – Due Dates Due to the snow day, the following things have changed: • Bacteria Lab – TODAY • Quizzes back tomorrow (Feb. 25th) • Mushroom Dissection Lab – Due tomorrow (Feb. 25th) *NOTE: We are not returning to this lab, so only submit the pictures you have and questions • Parasite Project – NOT to be handed in online, must be a paper copy. Also, the presentations will be very brief • Review day for Unit Test – Thursday, Feb. 27th – don’t miss it!  • Unit Test – Feb. 28th, Periods 2-3

5. Minds ON With your lab partner and those around you, try to think of 3 different things we learned about Kingdom Fungi on Wednesday. You will have 1 (“-ish”) minute to chat and the “fickle finger of fate” may choose anyone to answer. GO!

6. Yesterday’s (Wednesday's) Recap Kingdom Fungi • Characteristics (cell type: eukaryote, cell number: multi or singular), Habitat (terrestrial), Reproduction (sexual / asexual), Nutrition (heterotrophic) • Terms related to physical characteristics: Hyphae, mycelium, spores and spore structure (sporangium, club-like, basidium), fragmentation/budding • Penicillin – what does it have to do with the Kingdom Fungi? • Microscope use

7. What is a “phylum” again? • The second broadest taxonomic level in the modern classification system • Animal Kingdom • Both invertebrates (worms, insects, corals) and vertebrates (birds, mammals, reptiles) represented in each phylum – very broad range! • We will be looking at 10 different phyla: • Porifera, Cnidaria, Platyhelminthes, Rotifers, Nematoda, Annelida, Mollusca, Echinodermata, Arthropoda, and Chordata

8. Animal Phyla Lab • In groups of four-five, you will be visiting 12 stations around the classroom • Using the handout and the information at each station, you will need to investigate each phylum and derive the necessary information • Please be sure to note the correct number of the station you are at. • What is not completed at home will need to be completed as homework (HINT: This is PROBABLY something that you will need to know for the test on Friday)

9. Homework for Tonight… • Complete Animal Phyla sheet • Look up “biotechnology” • Key words:Viral Vectors, Recombinant DNA, Cancer Research, Genetically Modified Foods (these are only suggestions---if you find something else, please bring it in!) • Find a news/magazine article about one of these issues in biotechnology and be prepared to talk about them as a group tomorrow.
