The Golden Age in the East Abbasid Rule How did the Abbisids*Primary reason was force build a powerful *Built huge standing army empire? *Military outposts were spread throughout the empire *Used a policy of inclusion to persuade people to accept their rule *All Muslims whether Arab or not were equal *Encouraged Christians and Jews to serve in the government, this allowed the Abbisids to attract the most talented

The Golden Age in the East The new capital: Baghdad *Abbisids moved the capital from Damascus, east to Baghdad in 762 *Baghdad is located on the east west Silk Road trade routes and was considered “a marketplace for the world.” *Baghdad became a major world trade center *Merchants visited China, India and Northern Europe, and Africa *They traded metals, stones, silk, ivory spices, furs, and porcelain

  3. The Golden Age in the East Baghdad (capital) *By the early 800’s Baghdad had a population of over 900,000 people *This caused a huge demand for food & clothing *Farmers grew rice, sugar cane, cotton, fruits and vegetables

The Golden Age in the East Abbasid Advances Art and Design *The economy made many Abbasids very rich they began to support the arts and learning to display their wealth *Use of the human figure in art was thought to be an insult to God *Muslim art emphasized plant life and geometric patterns *Artists used tile, pottery, and wood *Artists used Arabic script in their art Calligraphy *The fine art of handwriting

Ibn Sina *Cannon of Medicine book that organized all known medical knowledge. Hospitals *Muslims built hospitals and treaded the poor and people who could not pay *Hospitals were teaching centers where doctors learn by treating real patients

The Decline of the Abbasids What challenges led*Factions challenged Abbasid rule to the decline of Abbasid rule?*Poor leadership = caliphs more concerned with the “easy life” *Did not protect traders which led to the need to raise taxes Fatimid Revolt *This faction claimed descent from Fatima (Muhammad’s daughter) *This group were Shi’a in belief *Had major religious differences with the Abbasids *Drove Abbasids out of North Africa Seljuk Turks* Captured Baghdad = end of Abbasids
