Duties of the President • Head of the federal Executive Branch • Enormous power and responsibility • Main Function: ensure federal law is fully executed • ALSO: Commander in Chief of armed forces, appoint top executive officials, ambassadors, and federal judges, and meet with heads of foreign governments

  3. Presidential Qualifications • To run for President of the US, you must be: ► at least 35 years old ► a resident of the US for at least 14 years ► a natural-born citizen • Experience is unwritten but important • Must have access to $$$ for campaign • Usually have moderate political beliefs • Most presidents have shared similar backgrounds (ethnic, economic, gender)

  4. Presidential Term & Salary • The 22nd Amendment limits the President to two terms (because of Roosevelt) of 4 years each • Congress determines the President’s salary (currently $400,000 per year) • Many, many benefits are provided for presidents (White House, travel, health care, security)

  5. Presidential Succession • The 25th Amendment established the order of succession to the presidency. • Vice President • Speaker of the House • President Pro Tempore • Secretary of State • Rest of Cabinet

  6. The Vice President • VP is there to take the place of the president in case he is unable to carry out the duties of the office (death, disability, etc.) • VP must meet the same qualifications as the President. • VP is the President of the Senate • Other duties as assigned by the Pres.

  7. The Electoral College • Each state chooses electors equal to the total representation in Congress for that state (Reps + Senators = Electors) • All but Maine & Nebraska are “Winner Take ALL” • 538 Total Electors; 270 needed to win • You are voting for which party’s electors get to vote in the Electoral College

  8. The Cabinet • The President leads the Executive Branch, which is made up of 15 Departments. • Each department has someone in charge, known as the “Secretary of……” • The 15 Department Heads make up the President’s Cabinet. • They advise the President and report goings on to him.

  9. Impeachment • Executive (and Judicial) officials, including the President and VP, can be removed from office through the impeachment process. • To be impeached, a person must be accused of “Treason, Bribery, or other High Crimes and Misdemeanors.” • House impeaches; Senate tries and maybe convicts and removes.
