  4. ‘Understanding’ questions Aberdeen has benefited greatly from the oil boom which started in the 1970s. The car park of Union Street’s chrome and glass shopping mall is awash with new 4X4s. People are tanned. Not sunbed tanned. Tanned as in two weeks in Goa tanned. The street furniture is fresh and well maintained. There is no peeling paint or rusted spots on benches or lampposts. Aberdeen’s success speaks for itself.

  6. ‘Understanding’ Questions Answer • “chrome and glass shopping mall” – Aberdeen has a state of the art shopping centre, designed, presumably, to serve its wealthy residents • “the street furniture is fresh and well maintained” - the pavements are well equipped with modern seating and lighting, both to a very high standard

  7. ‘Understanding’ Questions With an eye to the future, Owen Paterson , the UK environment secretary has been urging families to buy British food. Choosing to buy fewer imports would reduce the relentless pressure British farmers are under to churn out more for less. Paterson’s vision is of a more eco-friendly way of eating, based on locally produced, seasonal fruit and vegetables, and, crucially, British meat.

  8. Understanding’ Questions Questions • Explain in your own words the suggested benefit of choosing fewer imports. (2 marks) • Explain in your own words, Paterson’s ‘eco-friendly’ vision. (2)

  9. ‘Understanding’ Questions On a cold, bright November day I stood among a million almond trees and breathed in the sweet air. I was in Central Valley, California, in an orchard stretching over 7000,000 acres. Before me was a vision of how the British countryside may look one day. Beyond the almond orchards were fields of pomegranates, pistachios, grapes and apricots. Somewhere in th distance were almost two million dairy cows, producing six billion dollar’s worth of milk a year.

  10. ‘Understanding’ Questions Questions • Identify, using your own words, any two positive aspects of Central Valley. (2 marks)
