  1. Ignition Systems 2 DIS Ignition Mr. Lombardi, Lombardo, Setter

  2. DI and DIS DI DIS • Distributor Ignition • Distributorless Ignition

  3. Distributorless Ignition • DIS Parts • PCM • Coil Pack • ICM • Crank Sensor • Cam Sensor • Knock Sensor • MAP Sensor • Ignition Wires • Spark Plug

  4. PCM or ECM • The Brain of the modern ignition system • Controls the functions of the ignition system and whole car • Uses sensor info to create the primary circuit

  5. ICM • Takes place of the distributor • Receives signals (primary voltage) from PMC • Controls Dwell • Fires the Coils

  6. Coil • Amplifies primary circuit voltage from 12V to 50,000 plus. • Can be shared (pack) or one per cylinder

  7. Crank Position Sensor • Essentially the same purpose as the ignition pickup and trigger wheel in an electronic distributor. • Generates a signal that the PCM needs to determine the position of the crankshaft and the number one cylinder.

  8. Camshaft Position Sensor • Used to help the PCM determine the correct firing order.

  9. Knock Sensor • Detects engine vibrations (detonation) so the PCM can retard timing

  10. MAP • Connected to the intake manifold to monitor intake vacuum. • PCM uses this signal to measure engine load so ignition timing can be advanced and retarded as needed.

  11. Spark plug wires • There are several different Wire types and Manufactures depending on the application

  12. High Tension Ignition Wires • There are three basic wire types • CARBON SUPPRESSION CONDUCTORS • SOLID CORE CONDUCTOR WIRES • "LOW-RESISTANCE" SPIRAL WIRES

  13. Spark Plugs • Spark plugs come in different .. • heat ranges • Shapes • Sizes
